AKP Phnom Penh, December 17, 2025 -- The Association of Bulgarian Veteran Peacekeepers (ABVP) issued a formal declaration of solidarity with Cambodia on Monday, citing "deep concern" over escalating tensions along the Cambodia-Thailand border.
In a letter addressed to the Cambodian Ambassador to Bulgaria, H.E. Dr. Chea Chanboribo on Dec. 15, the veteran organisation—comprising former personnel of the United Nations Transitional Authority in Cambodia (UNTAC)—reaffirmed its support for Cambodia’s territorial sovereignty and the protection of its ancient cultural sites.
The ABVP emphasised a "blood bond" with Cambodia, noting that Bulgarian personnel were killed or wounded while serving the UN mission during Cambodia’s post-conflict transition in the 1990s.
The veterans described disputed border temples as "invaluable treasures of human civilisation," arguing that these Khmer heritage sites must be protected as symbols of unity rather than triggers for conflict.
While affirming Cambodia’s "legitimate right to security and dignity," the association urged both Phnom Penh and Bangkok to utilise United Nations frameworks and international law to prevent further escalation.
"A lasting solution can only be achieved through peaceful means, dialogue, and mutual respect," stated the letter, signed by ABVP Chairman Colonel Engineer Stefan Davidov and Secretary Sergeant Ivo Hristoskov.
The border between Cambodia and Thailand has long been a flashpoint for diplomatic and military friction, particularly surrounding the 11th-century Preah Vihear Temple and surrounding territories. The ABVP’s intervention highlights the continued international interest in the region's stability from former members of the global peacekeeping community.
The letter concludes by reaffirming the "enduring friendship" forged during the UNTAC era, pledging continued advocacy for Cambodia’s pursuit of international respect and sovereign integrity.
