AKP Phnom Penh, June 11, 2025 --
Cambodian Minister of Mines and Energy H.E. Keo Rottanak has clarified that Cambodia is currently not importing electricity from Thailand into its national grid, affirming that Cambodia has sufficient power supply to meet domestic demand.
This clarification comes amid recent tensions following a warning from Thailand’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs that it may suspend electricity exports to Cambodia if the border-related issues remain unresolved in a manner favourable to Thailand.
H.E. Keo Rotatanak emphasised that his confirmed fact of Cambodia’s current energy independence must not be misrepresented to undermine the importance of mutual support between Cambodia and Thailand or to intensify bilateral strain.
The Minister highlighted that cross-border electricity cooperation offers mutual benefits and should be viewed as a model of win-win collaboration.
On that basis, he added, the ASEAN Summit hosted by Malaysia discussed plans to establish an integrated ASEAN electricity grid to connect power supplies among member states.
Globally, shared power supplies among neighbouring countries are common practice that can be found even among developed countries like the United States of America and Canada and beyond.
H.E. Keo Rottanak reaffirmed Cambodia’s steadfast commitment to regional energy cooperation and its support for ASEAN's connectivity goals while encouraging continued collaboration between Cambodia and Thailand for the prosperity of the two nations and peoples.
