BREAKING: Cambodian Military Informs 13 Military Attachés and Diplomats that Thai Forces Captured 20 Cambodian Soldiers (1 Escaped, 2 Presumed Dead)

(Preah Vihear, July 30, 2025) — This morning, a senior Cambodian military commander informed military attachés and diplomats from 13 countries about a serious incident in which Thai troops captured 20 Cambodian soldiers following an agreed ceasefire. One soldier managed to escape, while two others are presumed dead.

According to the Cambodian military, the capture occurred just after a symbolic handshake between Thai and Cambodian troops at the front lines near the contested border area of Chum Te. The Cambodian side stated that the Thai forces extended a gesture of peace by initiating a handshake, only to abruptly detain the Cambodian soldiers during the interaction.

This revelation was made during an official inspection of the Cambodia–Thailand border, led by senior officials from the Ministry of National Defense, along with foreign military attachés, diplomats, and other stakeholders. The purpose of the visit was to assess the situation on the ground and monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between the two nations.

The Cambodian military briefed the 13 foreign delegations that on the morning of July 29, 2025, Cambodian soldiers approached Thai troops for a peaceful handshake in accordance with the ceasefire. However, on their return, Thai soldiers reportedly pointed their weapons and detained them without provocation.

As of the afternoon of July 30, 2025, according to Cambodian military sources, the detained Cambodian soldiers have not yet been released.
