Cambodia today welcomed Chinese President Xi Jinping for a two-day state visit, underscoring the growing depth of the “ironclad friendship” and Comprehensive Strategic Partnership between the two nations.
This visit—President Xi’s second since 2016—further solidifies bilateral cooperation, especially in the framework of China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), which has delivered transformational infrastructure and socio-economic development across Cambodia.
In the lead-up to this milestone visit, Khmer Times has partnered with People’s Daily to explore China’s key contributions to Cambodia’s socio-economic development, with a special focus on Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) projects across the country.
According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, President Xi is visiting Cambodia today and tomorrow at the invitation of King Norodom Sihamoni. During his stay, the Chinese President is scheduled to be granted Royal Audiences with King Sihamoni and the Queen-Mother Norodom Monineath Sihanouk at the Royal Palace.
He will also meet Senate President Hun Sen and Prime Minister Hun Manet to discuss strengthening bilateral ties and exchanging views on regional and global issues of mutual concern.
This landmark visit is expected to further cement the historical bonds of friendship and cooperation nurtured by successive leaders of both countries. A number of agreements are anticipated to be signed during the visit, boosting collaboration in key sectors.
President Xi’s first visit occurred in October 2016, during which he engaged in discussions with Cambodian leaders and visited the Royal Palace in Phnom Penh. His trip to Phnom Penh this time is part of a Southeast Asian tour that includes Vietnam and Malaysia. This visit aims to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between China and Cambodia.
Khy Sovanratana, a Secretary of State of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, said the visit aims at expanding relations between the two nations—an ironclad tie which has been cultivated by successive generations of leaders.
