FAIC Spokesperson: Cambodian Forces Did Not Violate Thai Territory

AKP Phnom Penh, June 06, 2025 --

In response to a demonstration held this morning in front of the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in Bangkok, the Spokesperson for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation (MFAIC) firmly rejected claims that Cambodian border forces had violated Thailand’s sovereignty.

H.E. Chum Sounry clarified that the actual incident occurred on the morning of May 28, 2025, at approximately 5:30 a.m., when Thai military forces opened fire on a Cambodian army post located in Techo Morokot village, Morokot commune, Choam Khsan district, Preah Vihear province—an area long recognised as a Cambodian military position. Tragically, the exchange resulted in the death of a Cambodian soldier.

“This incident constitutes a violation of Cambodia’s sovereignty and breaches the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both governments in June 2000, which aims to maintain peace and stability along the shared border, especially in disputed areas,” the spokesperson stated.

He reaffirmed Cambodia’s consistent respect for the sovereignty of its neighbours and reiterated the country’s commitment to transforming the border into a zone of peace, friendship, cooperation, and development. Cambodia, he added, remains dedicated to resolving disputes through peaceful means and in accordance with international law.

Regarding the demonstration in Bangkok, H.E. Hun Saroeun, Cambodian Ambassador to Thailand, confirmed that all embassy staff are safe and continuing to work normally. The embassy remains open and is providing services as usual to both Cambodian citizens and foreigners.

According to H.E. Ambassador, the protest was organised by a group of around 200 people identifying themselves as the “Network of Students and People for Reform of Thailand.” The rally, held in front of the embassy on the morning of June 6, was peaceful and orderly, and the demonstrators dispersed at 11:15 a.m, while Thai police had deployed a comprehensive security presence to ensure the safety of the embassy and its staff.
